The Via Ferrata traverses the steep limestone face of the fort. It traverses more or less steep ledges, interspersed with comfortable ledges and terraces, and ends with a 15 m monkey bridge over the moat. The via ferrata at Fort l'Écluse is relatively accessible, even if it doesn't appear to be suitable for beginners. Access is free, and can be made fairly early in the season due to the low altitude. Equipment hire from Fort l'Ecluse Aventure: www.fort-lecluse-aventure.com. Remember that it's essential to be equipped with via ferrata gear (harness, helmet, lanyard with two karabiners and shock absorber). If necessary, don't hesitate to add a rope for roped climbing, and carry some gear (lanyards) for resting.
Infos générales
- Référence cartographique : The via is continuous, but can be divided into two distinct sections. The first is made up of more or less steep switchbacks linked by traverses. Two overhanging passages require greater effort. Above these overhangs, you reach a small platform with a magnificent view of the Rhône. A small ledge leads to the second part. This involves climbing up the rocky spur leading to the ramparts. There's less emptiness in this second section, despite a very pleasant leaf-peg passage above the previous walls. We finally reach the ramparts, which we skirt on an aerial ledge. A rather anecdotal beam and monkey bridge lead to the Fort. From here, a footpath takes 20 minutes to reach the parking lot.
